HOUSTON A longtime Montrose-area antique shop is severely damaged after a Sunday morning fire.

It broke out in the attic of the Colin Gibbins Antiques store on Woodhead and Welch.

The British furniture store has been around more than 30 years. No one was inside, but fire crews said the temperatures inside reached 300 degrees.

The age of the building and an attached home made it difficult for firefighters.

The upper floor was bowing severely and we might not have discovered that in the middle of the night. We kinda got lucky on this one, Stephen Cichon, with Houston Fire Department, said. In the middle of the night like I said, depending on when it would have been discovered, it could have been a very serious fire.

Firefighters said the damage is extensive but with repairs, the shop could open again.

They are still looking into what caused the fire.
