HOUSTON Quarterback Darrell Colbert was one of four players from Lamar High School to sign their national letter of intent with SMU on Wednesday.

Colbert was joined by OL Braylon Hyder, LB Kyran Mitchell and WR Shelby Walker.

It s a blessing to know that my parents won t have to pay for me to go to college, Colbert said. Just to play with my fellow teammates from Lamar and to further my education is a great feeling.

Colbert was one of the best quarterbacks in the state during his time at Lamar, leading the Redskins to the 5A state championship in 2012. Colbert totaled over 2,000 total yards and 28 touchdowns during his senior season.

SMU is quickly becoming Lamar-North as with this recruiting class, the Mustangs will now have 6 players who at one point played for the Redskins.

We are just trying to bring a winning tradition to SMU just like we did with Lamar, Colbert said. It s going to be real cool being around people that are trying to do the same thing you want to do.

Head coach Tom Nolen is proud of his SMU-bound players and the others who signed on Wednesday. Lamar had a record nine student-athletes headed to play at the next level.

This is really one of the best parts of coaching. You ve seen these kids, many of them since middle school and you watch them growing up to be young men, Nolan said. It s been a very special group and the best one we ve ever had at Lamar.

We finished this past season a little shorter than what we wanted to, Colbert said. Each guy going their own way and that s great to see.
