LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas One man is dead after deputies said he was shot by his father during a family dispute Friday afternoon in the Hardin area.
According to the Liberty County Sheriff s Office, Flint Russell Wilkey, 35, was shot and killed by his father Billy Wilkey, 67, after a verbal argument escalated into a shooting incident.
Investigators said deputies and Liberty County EMS responded to a call of a shooting just after 2 p.m. on County Road 2061 and found the elder Wilkey standing in the front yard of the home.
The father told investigators that his son and daughter-in-law, who lives near his residence, had been involved in a verbal argument at their home.
To avoid further trouble, Flint Wilkey s wife came to her father-in-law s home where her husband followed her, investigators said.
Another verbal argument began but the son left the residence to only return again shortly later.
He pulled up his pick-up truck up to the front door of his father s home, deputies said.
According to witnesses, the son came into his father s home. He then began a physical assault on his own wife, hitting her with his fist and pulling her hair.
The son pulled his wife from the house and was trying to get her into his truck to head back home, deputies said. However, she was struggling while trying to protect herself from him striking her.
The father attempted to stop his son from beating his daughter-in-law, deputies said. The son then turned on his father, who then fired one shot from a 9mm handgun which struck his son.
Justice of the Peace, Judge Cody Parrish arrived at the scene and pronounced the son deceased.
The father was questioned and a statement taken at which time he was then released, deputies said. The case will be referred to a grand jury with no charges filed at this time.
