HOUSTON -- Police found a burning body while responding to reports of a partially submerged truck in a bayou in far south Houston.

They said the victim, who was in his 30s or 40s, was violently assaulted and then set on fire. Police would not yet say how he was assaulted, but they believe the victim died before the fire was started.

Officers made the grusome discovery when they were called to W. Airport Boulevard at Scott Street shortly before 8:30 a.m. Friday. They went to investigate a truck in the bayou and discovered the burning body in a nearby wooded area.

That's kind of scary, it makes you not want to be out by yourself, said neighbor Sheryl Dotson. That's too close for comfort.

Investigators believe whoever attempted to put the truck in the bayou was probably trying to get rid of it.

Police spoke to the truck's owner, who said a family friend was driving it at the time. Investigators have not yet released the name of the victim.

Troy Ben told KHOU 11 News that the victim was his uncle.

It s hurting me because we are supposed to go out do things in the country and then this happened, he said.
