HOUSTON APrecinct 3 deputy constableis on leave after shoot and killing a suspect at a convenience store in east Harris County Thursday morning.

Deputies said a man, who had taken his friend s car without permission, led a constable on a chase around 5 a.m.The suspect crashed his vehicle, then hopped out and fled on foot.

Deputies searched the area for the suspect and found him about three hours later at the Sunrise Super Stop on Market Street at Sheldon.

Deputies gave the store clerk the suspect s description and asked if he had been seen.The clerk said he had, and in fact, was lying down in the store room.The clerk said the suspect claimed he was cold, so he was allowed to lie down in the back.

The deputy went to the store room and told the suspect to get up.That is when the suspect allegedly lunged at the deputy, authorities said. The deputy, in fear for his safety, opened fire.

The vehicle he was in had shell casings and an empty holster, and some of the crimes he s been involved in in the past, he had been armed, said Capt. Jon Moore, Precinct 3.

As part of standard procedure, the deputy who shot the suspect is on leave until the investigation is completed.
