HOUSTON The first breast milk depot opened Thursday at the southwest Women Infants and Children Clinic in Houston.

The program offers free screening to moms who want to become donors. Then their milk is pasteurized and given to babies who are premature or sick.

Two local moms helped kick off the opening by donating their breast milk.

Health officials say more than 9 million ounces of breast milk are needed across the country. Currently only about 2 million are being donated.
