HOUSTON A Harris County sheriff s deputy was shotduring a bank robbery Tuesday, prompting Klein ISD officials to briefly put four nearby campuses on lockdown.

Deputy Mitchell Bettin was working securityat the Preferred Bank in the 16600 block of Stuebner Airline near Cypresswood Drive.

Twoarmed robbers entered thebank around 1:45 p.m. while a third waited outside.

Bettin got into a shootout withthe suspects and one of them shot him in the hand.Bettin, 44,was taken toBen Taub Hospital. The deputy was conscious and alert as he was loaded into the ambulance.

Investigators said the deputy fired six rounds at the fleeing suspects, and struck at least one of them.

The wounded suspect was later arrested at LBJ Hospital where he'd gone for treatment.

The other two robbers got away.

Klein ISD briefly put Klein High School, Kleb Intermediate, Mittelstadt Elementary and the Annex on lockdown after the robbery.

Bettin has been with the sheriff's department since 1991.
