SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- An alert was sent out Friday about a telephone scam targeting people in Kerrville.

Police said an 80-year-old woman received a phone call from someone who told her she had won $8 million and a brand new Mercedes. But there was a catch.

The caller explained to the elderly woman how she needed to buy $20,000 worth of prepaid money cards and give the account numbers, according to the Kerrville Police Department.

The woman quickly became the victim of a scam after the caller transferred all the money from the cards into another bank account and was never heard from again, police said.

Law enforcement is warning residents in the San Antonio area to be wary of such calls. Anyone who has fallen victim to this type of scam is asked to contact KPD.
