WISE COUNTY A 13-year-old boy was airlifted to an area hospital after he was shot Tuesday afternoon, Wise County Sheriff's investigators said.
According to Capt. Wes Wallace, authorities were alerted to the shooting at about 1:30 p.m. off County Road 3764 near Briar.
An air ambulance was called to a nearby gas station, where the teen, identified as Carl Davis of Springtown, was taken with a wound to his abdomen.
Tammie Shemberger, a cook at the gas station, said she immediately called 911, and an operator helped her through how to help the boy.
It looked like he was shot straight through, she said. The wound was from the side of the stomach all the way to the back, so we used towels to try and hold it.
Carl Davis was flown to Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for surgery to repair wounds to the boys' colon. He was reported in stable condition late Tuesday night and was expected to remain hospitalized for up to a week.
Deputies confirmed a group of kids had been playing outside a mobile home when they spotted a snake. Two of them went inside to grab a .22 rifle, and it accidentally discharged when they were removing it from the gun cabinet.
Right now, it just looks like an accident, said investigator Wallace.
Wallace said no parents were at the home but that an adult relative was in a house nearby, and that she drove the young teen to the hospital.
