HOUSTON Three local men turned problems into patents and came up with big ideas.

Toby Sims wanted to solve an everyday problem. The deputy constable was tired of tires being stolen.

He came up with an invention to make rims impossible to steal, and said there is no way you can take the tire off the hub.

I kept on and on and on and making sure I had the right materials, said Sims.

Seeing a problem and dreaming up a way to fix it is a Houston tradition.

The late George Ballas invented the weed eater and it changed yard work forever.

Ron Cooke invented a contraption in his garage in Bellaire that made picking up leaves and other things so much easier. He named it the Bag Butler.

All three men dared to make their dreams come true.
