HOUSTON -- A New York city teenager is suing after he says he was racially profiled while trying to buy a luxury belt at Barney s on Madison Avenue, CNN.com reported.
Trayvon Christian, an African-American engineering student, paid for a $349 Ferragamo belt with his debit card. He showed his ID, but after he left the store two officers stopped him outside and questioned how he could afford the belt.
The teen was handcuffed and taken to a holding cell where he was detained for about an hour.
Christian was released once the debit card was confirmed, and police apologized.
He returned the belt to Barney s and is now suing the New York Police Department, and the department store for unspecified damages.
