BEDIAS, Texas A 10-year-old boy shot his teenage sister and then turned the gun on himself late Thursday, deputies in rural Walker County said.

The Walker County Sheriff says the boy and his 15-year-old sister got into an argument around 9 p.m. Thursday at their home in the 200 block of Duke Lane.

The 10-year-old apparently knew the combination to the family s gun safe and retrieved a handgun.

Walked into the 15-year-old s room and discharged the weapon multiple times in the direction of his sister, said Detective Gregory Williams with the Walker County Sheriff s Office.

The girl was struck at least three times. The boy then turned the gun on himself.

Both were rushed by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. The boy didn t make it. At last check, his sister was in critical condition.

The children s mother was downstairs when the shooting happened. Their father was at work.

Their cattle ranch sits on 40 acres in the community of Bedims, approximately 18 miles west of Huntsville. It s the kind of place you move to, to get away from big city life and big city crime.

At this point the sheriff does not believe the grieving parents will face charges, given that they had taken precautions to keep their guns secured.

The siblings names have not been released. He was a student at Huntsville Intermediate School. She attends Huntsville High School.

The school district said extra counselors will be on hand Monday for students who need them.
