HOUSTON A man who was sleeping inside a storage shed was killed Friday morning when it went up in flames.

The fire was reported around 1:45 a.m. on East 2nd Street at Wichman Street.

Neighbors identified the victim as 61-year-old Otis Davis.

Theycould hear his cries for help and tried to save him, 28-year-old Stephen Onibayo told the Houston Chronicle.

Onibayo, who owns the property,said Davis hadhad been sleeping in the shed for months. Onibayo said he and his familybuilt the small shack a few years ago becauseDavis was homeless and needed a place to sleep. There was no running water or electricity.

Human life is precious, Onibayo told the Chronicle. It s tragic. It s sad.

The exact cause of the fire is under investigation by HFD arson investigators as well as Houston police homicide detectives.

They believe it may have been causedby a cigarette.
