GALVESTON, Texas Smoke from a grass fire on the east side of Galveston Bay blanketed parts of the county this morning, prompting a flood of phone calls, an official said.

Bruce Clawson, the city of Texas City s Homeland Security director, sent phone messages to residents, letting them know of the situation.

It s an industrial town, and we received a lot of phone calls, Clawson said. We called and verified the source of the smoke, which smelled like a grass fire.

Clawson learned the smoke was possibly coming from the Bolivar Peninsula or somewhere on the east side of Galveston Bay. League City emergency management officials also sent out a bulletin to residents shortly after 1 p.m. regarding the smoke, which is expected to continue blowing into the area.
