HOUSTON Nearly every high school student in the Houston Independent School District is getting a laptop.

The new program kicked off Tuesday at Madison High School.

It is all part of the district s Powerup Initiative. The goal is to level the playing field for those whose families can t afford a computer at home.

The computers are loaded with district-approved software, and filters that blocks students from inappropriate content and some social media sites.

The computers will cost the district $17 million over the next four years, supplemented by a small fee paid by the families.

Students say the fee is worth it.

Technology helps a lot better than writing everything and turning it in. My handwriting is not the best, I know typing helps me, said Clarence Jerome.
