HOUSTON The 2014 NFL Draft is in May and The Houston Texans are on the clock.
They could take a quarterback, like many expect. However, team officials said on Friday that the door is open to possibly trading the top pick if they see it being beneficial for the team.
If the opportunity presents itself to move back because it is a very valuable pick, then we ll entertain those, Texans general manager Rick Smith said. We ll get a good player or we ll move and get good value for the pick.
This will be the 3rd time in franchise history the Texans will pick first overall. Back in 2002 they selected quarterback David Carr and in 2006 they drafted defensive end Mario Williams.
My general approach to the draft is to be open to all possibilities and be prepared for all possibilities, Smith said. We believe, wholeheartedly on value. I don t think you take a particular position just because you need a particular position at any point in the draft especially at the first pick.
The position of greatest need is quarterback. Matt Schaub, TJ Yates and Case Keenum combined to throw 19 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, 5 of which were returned for scores for the other team. The group had a combined QBR rating of 74.0, according to ESPN.com.
Still, Smith would not commit to saying that was their number one priority in the draft.
I think improving our football team is a priority, Smith said. Obviously we have a situation right now where we have to get that position resolved. We did not have effective play at that position last year.
The NFL Draft will take place from May 5-8 in New York City.
