HOUSTON -- Nelson Mandela's inspiration reached people around the world, including right here in Houston.

On this sad day, the thoughts, prayers, and wishes of all Americans, and peace loving people the world over, are with Nelson Mandela and his family, said Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

The most exciting picture to me was when he was named president and seemed to have respected the very man who had been handed the government that imprisoned him, said Reverend Bill Lawson.

He was still fresh out of prison and everyone focused on him, said historian Suna Umari. He had great hope for the future of South Africa.

His strength permeated the courtroom from the beginning to the end of that trial, said Nat Levy, who represented Mandela in his 1964 trial.
