LEAGUE CITY A lawsuit brought by a group of day laborers in League City over their right to solicit work in the city may end up costing the city more than $500,000.
The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund is seeking compensation for attorneys fees and costs to the tune of $503,633. The group filed a lawsuit in federal court in 2011 for the day laborer group Jornaleros de las Palmas after the police department began cracking down on congregations of day laborers.
A U.S. District Court judge ruled in favor of the workers, stating that the city s attempt to stop them from soliciting work was a violation of their First Amendment rights.
