LA MARQUE A butcher knife found embedded in a woman s cheek was among 28 stab wounds inflicted upon the 84-year-old, a prosecutor said Tuesday during a teenager s capital murder trial.

Jor Dan Jacqueinn Maurice Lewis, 16, pleaded not guilty in the robbery and slaying of Vaneeda Wright, who was found dead in her kitchen by her daughter and 11-year-old grandson May 29, 2011, in La Marque.

Lewis was 14 at the time of the killing. He is either one of the youngest or the youngest teenager ever certified to stand trial in Galveston County as an adult in a capital murder case. Lewis is too young to face the death penalty, but, if convicted, he would first become eligible for parole after 40 years in prison.

Margaret Hindman, Lewis defense attorney, said the scene of the killing resembled a horror movie, but she cautioned the jury against making early conclusions on the evidence presented.

After you ve heard all that, I believe you re going to conclude that this 14-year-old didn t commit this murder, Hindman said.

Paul Handy testified that on the day Wright died, he was sitting on a bench in his front yard when he saw Wright outside her house about 1:45 p.m. At 2:15 p.m., Handy saw Lewis, who had once lived in the neighborhood, walk up to Wright s house. He noted the time by looking at his watch but couldn t see from his vantage point whether Lewis went inside
