HOUSTON A Clear Lake man who struggled with his own weight problem says he understands the anchor who went on air to address a viewer s critical comments.

Jennifer Livingston, a Wisconsin news anchor, took to the airways, during a 4-minute segment to address a viewer who sent her an email about her weight.

Surely you don t consider yourself a suitable example for this community s young people, girls in particular. Obesity is one of the worst choices a person can make and one of the most dangerous habits to maintain, the viewer wrote.

You may think it, but what gives you the right to say it, Alex Salinas said.

In a seven-year span, Alex Salinas of Clear Lake went from 170 to 350 pounds.

He said people openly made comments about his weight. He recalled one incident that happened while he was working as a bank manager.

I remember I was talking to one person and a woman straight told me, you are fat. Out of everything else she said to me in the argument, that s all that hit me, he said.

Salinas has since shed 150 pounds.

But he said he feels for Livingston, and said he is happy to see her take a stand.
