TEXAS CITY An 11-year-old girl was struck and killed by a big rig truck as she waited for the school bus Monday morning in Texas City.

Christina Lopez was sitting at the bus stop just before 8 a.m. when the trucker, a neighbor, turned the corner and hit her.

We believe she was sitting in the roadway, or partially in the roadway in the pavement itself, and he struck her and ran over her body, said Texas City police spokesman Capt. Brian Goetschius. And he immediately stopped 50 feet from her body.

The Levi Fry Intermediate School sixth grader was pronounced dead at the scene in the 2900 block of 26th Street.

After they picked up her body, they went to notify the mother. You could hear her scream.. it was awful, said Adelina Moreno, a neighbor. It s sad, very sad.

Christina s father drove up a short time later and saw the emergency vehicles.

And the dad didn t even know. He parked over there, and they just told him it was an emergency, Moreno said.

Some family members were so distraught they threw rocks at the truck driver s home until police officers asked them to stop.

But they were upset, screaming, You killed my daughter. We could hear that, Moreno said. They were relieving their anger and frustration.

The driver volunteered to undergo a blood test and is cooperating with police. Investigators believe the glare from the scene may have caused him to miss seeing Christina.

There were no other children at the bus stop area when the accident happened.

Christina s school sent a letter home to parents to notify them of the accident so they could talk with their children about it.
