WILLIS, Texas Hundreds of people showed up to Charles Traylor Sports Park in Willis Saturday afternoon for a heartfelt cause; a barbecue benefit for the Schuchardt s.

I appreciate it.I want to thank everyone that s here in support of me and for the kids, said Keith Schuchardt.

Schuchardt s wife, Kala Golden, was shot to death Tuesday afternoon when she was leaving the pediatrician s office, south of the Woodlands, with her three-day-old son, Keegan.

Cops say Verna McClain killed her, then ran off with little Keegan. He was found unharmed nearly six hours later.

The tragedy touched people from as far away as Australia.

We ve been getting calls from people all over the place, people calling in donations, said Joe MckPie, an organizer.

Volunteers sold food, shirts and held silent auctions all in support of the family.

Meanwhile Schuchardt is working with CPS to gain full custody of Keegan, his two-year-old brother and four-year- old half-brother.

For now, they are staying with nearby relatives and Schuchardt has 24-hour access to the children.

All the money raised will go to the Schuchardt family.

As for McClain, she will be facing a judge first thing Monday morning.
