A Texas girl plagued with a rare illness triggered by a brain surgery is getting help from complete strangers.
Alexis Shapiro lives near San Antonio and was just nine years old when she had surgery to remove a benign brain tumor.
During the operation her hypothalamus and pituitary gland were damaged leaving her with a disorder that made her constantly hungry without ever feeling full.
The 12-year-old now weighs close to 200 pounds and has developed several obesity-related illnesses, but her insurance company is refusing to cover gastric bypass saying she is too young.
Now more than 1,200 people have donated to an online fund raising more than $53,000 for surgery.
Shapiro will get her operation in six weeks.
