HOUSTON On any given school day in North Houston, students walk across Spears Road from nearby neighborhoods to get to Davis High School and parents say it is dangerous.

There are no crosswalks or guards at the intersections.

On Monday morning, an eleventh grade student was struck while crossing Spears Road. Witnesses said a speeding SUV came out of nowhere and knocked the girl down.

The victim was taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann. The extent of her injuries was not immediately known.

Witnesses said the SUV driver remained at the scene.

This is not surprising to me that this happened, parent Ernestine Lindsey said.

She said her daughter often walks to school with the victim.

We need street lights here very bad, she said.

But even that may not be enough to change bad drivers.

They just don t follow the speed limits, parent Nicole Rubio said.

But parents said part of the problem also lies in not knowing who is responsible for the road.

Sometimes the city wants to claim it, sometimes county wants claims it, parent Louis Ventura said.

He worries there could be another accident if the matter is not resolved soon.
