HOUSTON A sting operation involving the Drug Enforcement Agency took a dangerous turn Wednesday after a suspect tried to flee with his two children in tow.
It started when undercover agents targeted the father and another suspect in the parking lot of a Food Town grocery store at Veteran s Memorial and the North Belt.
At one point, the father grew suspicious and fled the scene, speeding off in his Ford Expedition and hitting an agent along the way. That agent was not seriously hurt, but their partner fired.
No one was struck. It is still not clear if agents knew there were kids inside the SUV.
More than a mile up the road, the vehicle hit a car and its tire came loose. The SUV ultimately crashed at Antoine and the suspects were both soon arrested at the scene.
Deputies called the kids mother, who was at work. She called her father, Eli Arriaga.
She s all upset, of course she is, Arriaga said. And we re just trying to find out what s going on.
He said neither he, nor his daughter, knew the father had trouble with the law.
The suspect s mother told 11 News she had received a text from her son shortly before the sting and that nothing seemed wrong.
Like many people, she is grateful to know the kids are OK.
Harris County Deputy Tom Gilliland said investigators do not have any other suspects in the case.
