HOUSTON One of the victims held captive in a Houston home has died.

William Merle Greenawalt, 79, had been hospitalized since July 19 when he and two other men were rescued by police.

HPD investigators said the three men were living in deplorable conditions while being forced to hand over their monthly incomes.

The victims told officers they were given only scraps to eat and weren t allowed to leave the duplex in the 8600 block of White Castle Lane. It was sparsely furnished with only one chair and no bathroom.

Walter Renard Jones, 31, is charged with two counts of injury to the elderly /serious bodily injury. It s not clear if the charges will now be upgraded.

Two other victims who were treated for malnutrition at LBJ Hospital have been released to the care of Adult Protective Services.

Police were told the men were lured to the home with the promise of food, alcohol and cigarettes. Investigators are looking into whether they were homeless before.

They were also allegedly forced to turn over their Social Security and Veteran s benefits checks to their captor.

Court records showed Jones had previous charges beginning in 2002 for theft, marijuana possession and failing to register as a sex offender.
