HOUSTON A man who ran off and left his girlfriend to die after crashing into a tree in early April faced a Harris County judge Monday morning.

An Ly, 31, was charged with failure to stop and render aid.

Houston police said that on April 9,Ly was driving a black Lexus SUV eastbound in the 7600 block of Bellaire around 1:26 a.m. when he lost control, ran off the roadway and struck a tree.

Witnesses sawLy hop out of the driver s side and flee the scene. His girlfriend, Kathy Huynh, was partially ejected in the crash and police saidLy made no attempt to help her or call for assistance.

He later checked himself into Southwest Memorial Hermann Hospital, the same place his critically injured girlfriend had been taken to, but denied being in any automobile accident, according to court documents.Ly claimed he was at the hospital seeking treatment after being jumped. That was not true.

Investigators learned thatLy and his girlfriend had been at a bar with another couple drinking and eating crawfish shortly before the crash. His friends said they warnedLy that he was in no condition to drive, but he ignored them. They said after the crash, he actually called them and asked if they could come and pick him up.

The couplesaid while they were taking him to the hospital, he admitted he left his girlfriend at the site of the crash.

Witnesses from the crash scene also positively identifiedLy as the person that fled.

Ly s girlfriend held on for more than a week, but died from her injuries on April 18.

Ly s bail was set at $100,000. Authorities said that amount couldbe reduced once he surrenders his passport.
