ATLANTA -- Federal health officials report a salmonella outbreak linked to ground beef.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says 16 people in five states have gotten sick from salmonella in ground beef. Eight of them were hospitalized, but there have been no reports of salmonella-related deaths. Texas is not one of the states affeted.

The CDC named two companies as likely sources of the contaminated meat. Those companies recalled more than a thousand pounds of ground beef last week.

The CDC reccomends people not consume raw or undercooked ground beef.
