ELROY, Texas It was a melodramatic day chock full of surprises at the Circuit of the Americas Track in Elroy Sunday for the big U.S.Grand Prix race.

A spokesperson told KVUE that more than 117,000 fans packed into the venue making the first year of the U.S. Grand Prix a success in the eyes or organizers, drivers and race fans.

I think it's surpassing everyone's expectations whether it was Mr. Ecclestone or whether it was Red McCombs or whether it's just the average fan who showed up out here and maybe they didn't know anything about Texas or the United States even and now they are just blown away, said Texas Governor Rick Perry to KVUE News.

After a near 2-hour race, Britain s Lewis Hamilton who came in to Sunday s race ranked number five edged out the number one ranked Sebastian Vettel by a fraction of a second to become the first winner of the U.S. Grand Prix.

I was able to race with Sebastian you know to have kind of a wheel to wheel race and I hunted him down the whole time.It was one of my favorites, said Hamilton.

Drivers said they could think of little to nothing to change for next year s race at the Circuit of the Americas, however they are hoping the new track gets some T.L.C. .

Whenwe started it was very slippery so yeah I think they know for next year they will clean a little bit more before we start, said Sebastian Vettel.
