HOUSTON A Houston man was in big trouble after a small girl left in his care was found wandering alone on a busy roadway in north Harris County.

Joshua Montel Stephens, 19, was charged with endangering a child.

Precinct 4 deputy constables were dispatched to the 24000 block of Aldine Westfield on September 19 after a 3-year-old girl was found walking alone on a four-lane road with the posted speed limit of 45 miles per hour.

The child was able to tell deputies her name and led them back to her home, which was nearly a mile away.

When deputies arrived to her house, they found a 10-year-old boy alone inside. That child told them he had just arrived home from school and his big brother Stephens was supposed to be caring for the girl.

After nearly 10 minutes, Stephens walked up and went directly past deputies and into the home. He then came back outside and asked why the children were in the squad car. He was then informed where the girl was found, according to deputies.

Deputies said Stephens disputed them, saying he went to the store to get the kids some food and was only gone for two minutes. They told him that was not true because they had been there longer than that. Deputies also noted that Stephens had no grocery bags in his hand.

Stephens bail was set at $2,000.
