HOUSTON -- Construction workers struck a gas line, sparking a fire along the Gulf Freeway on Monday morning, firefighters said.

The Houston Fire Department was called to the freeway s northbound frontage road near Bay Area Boulevard shortly before 10 a.m.

Views from Air 11 showed a backhoe and a truck on fire near the gas line, but HFD said no injuries were reported.

Area roadways were not directly affected, but the Gulf Freeway was slow in both directions due to rubbernecking.

It took firefighters a little over an hour to get a handle on the blaze. Then then were able to cut off the gas to the fire to extinguish it.
