GALVESTON, Texas Galveston Island officially kicked off its Mardi Gras celebrations Friday night. The city is expecting more than 300,000 revelers to pack the Island over the next two weeks.

This is the third largest Mardi Gras in the country, said Leah Cast, of Galveston s Convention and Visitor s Bureau. So there will be lots of big parades, big concerts, headliners, kids activities, adults activities, anything you can think of.

More than 2,000 umbrella dancers took the streets of Downtown Galveston to kick off opening night. Country band, The Cadillac 3, performed on the main stage in front of thousands of fans.

On Saturday, Mardi Gras revelers can watch five parades throughout the day, including the popular Mystic Krewe of Aquarius Kick-Off Parade at noon and the Krewe of Gambrinus Lights Up the Night Parade at 6 p.m. Both parades will be a mile longer this year, with a new route traveling along the seawall and then down 25th Street into the Entertainment District.

At 5:30 p.m., country-rock star Uncle Kracker known for his hit song Follow Me will give a headline performance on the Bud Light Stage in Saengerfest Park at 23rd and Strand.
