KATY, Texas Bothteenagers killed in Saturday night s mass shooting at a house party in Cypress were students at Morton Ranch High School.

Arielle Shepherd, 17, was a 10th-grade student described by her mother as an angel and a social butterfly.

Qu eric Danariu Richardson, 17, was a junior at Morton Ranch High School.

On Monday, officials with the Katy Independent School District had the difficult task of explaining his death to the campus.

Before classes even started, the news had already spread about the deadly weekend party and the students from Morton Ranch who were there.

Something that you never wanted to happen to your kids, when you want to protect them, hold them and everything else, Daniel Balderis, a parent, said.

Some students said they knew about the party and avoided it.

I heard them talking about the party and everything but I had plans that weekend, so I wasn t going to go, Kimberly Nabarrete, a student, said.

Students and parents alike wondered how a teen party could have gotten so out of control.

It shouldn t happen. She should have shut it down at some point saying you know that was just too much and send everybody home, Whanell Brown, a parent, said of party organizers.

What do you say to your kids after something like that? Just to be careful? Tanya Briscoe, another parent, said.

Officials from Katy ISD do not know the number of students from the district who were there at the shooting scene. They have added grief counselors to help students affected by Saturday's incident.

You know it s a tragic event. That s all I can say. I think we all see that was supposed to be a happy celebration turned into real tragedy, Steve Stanford, Katy ISD spokesman, said.

It is a reason why some parents said they will not be allowing their children to go any parties anytime soon.

There were also more units from Katy ISD Police on campus Monday afternoon to provide a better sense of security.
