HOUSTON Omer Asik had a breakout season for the Rockets in 2012-2013. It seemed like he could be on the way to being the center of the future.
That idea didn t last very long. However, Asik s future could still be with the Rockets.
On the same day the Houston Rockets signed Dwight Howard, general manager Daryl Morey made it clear that he values the play of his Turkish center and doesn t plan on dealing him before the season.
When we didn t have Omer in there last year we sucked, I mean we were terrible. I m just being frank. That is where we lost games, said Morey. When we had Omer out there we were a top ten defensive team.
Last season, Asik doubled his career point total and increased his rebounds numbers. He averaged 10 points and over 11 rebounds per game. Adding Dwight Howard will give the team the much needed defensive consistency that they lacked.
Now we have a defensive player of the year and Omer, that position is so important if you re going to have a solid defense, said Morey. Now we have two of the best in the league.
Morey was also very clear about the future of point guard Jeremy Lin. Rumors have been swirling that the team is looking to deal Lin, but for now, there is nothing in the works.
In fact, both Asik and Lin have gotten the endorsement of the teams new superstar along with guard James Harden.
The reality is James and Dwight want to play with Jeremy and Omer, said Morey. I ve been kicked down to assistant GM, they are GM Dwight and GM James. They want to play with them and that s always a good start.
Lin averaged 13.4 points per game along with 6.1 assists in 2012-2013.
