HOUSTON A good Samaritan was shot Friday morning while rushing to help a woman being attacked by her estranged husband at a strip center in northwest Harris County.
A woman who worked at a nail salon in the 3000 block of FM 1960 at Aldine Westfield saw her estranged husband pull up in a silver pickup truck. Frightened, she immediately locked the front door. The husband began shooting, shattering the window to the nail salon, deputies said.
He was dragging his wife out of the salon when two good Samaritans from the barber shop next door rushed in and tackled him. There was a struggle and one of the men was shot in the head.
He was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital and is expected to survive.
Henry McHenry was the other hero who risked his life. He works at the barber shop and is friends with the gunman s estranged wife.
She been coming to me for a couple of months about the domestic abuse she be going through and how bad things were, McHenry said. She knew it was going to escalate and become bad.
Trong Nguyen owns the nail salon. His brother is the suspect and his sister-in-law was the target.
I m hurt for their family, Nguyen said. I think my brother, he think like when he have the job, he don t want the wife to work no more because they have to take care of the kids.
A witness leaving nearby Gold s Gym witnessed the chaos.
The guy who did the shooting was struggling trying to get up because he knew people were dialing 911. I was trying to call police, I was on the phone with emergency response, the witness said. And he was struggling trying to get up and the guy held him down even more, and the next thing you know, I heard sirens and the police came.
The suspect was taken into custody. Deputies said he also had a rifle in his pickup.
