HOUSTON Police apprehended a man suspected in the fatal stabbing of a southwest Houston woman Monday afternoon.
Lawrence Chambers was held on a pending charge of murder.
Late Sunday, a teenage girl returned to her family s home in the 2800 block of Tidewater Drive to find her mother and brother had been brutally stabbed. Houston police had been looking for Lawrence Champers, the child s stepfather, to try and determine what happened.
The 14-year-old girl had been spending the weekend at her grandmother s house. She told investigators that she had been concerned after not hearing from her mom. After returning home around 11 p.m., what she found sent her running next door for help.
She said Help, my mother needs help. But I thought maybe her mother was sick, Robert Chavis, the neighbor, said. He was not prepared for what he was about to find.
The child s mother, Jemal Chambers, was in a bloody heap on the floor and her 13-year-old son was lying nearby.
I walked into that room and the mother was lying on the side of the bed, her throat had been slashed, there was blood, her face was badly beaten, Chavis said. I saw the look on that little girl s face and she ll have nightmares for the rest of her life.
The boy was rushed to the hospital where he remained in critical condition Monday.
I feel for the baby, I feel for the child that was stabbed. I feel for the daughter who had to actually walk in and find that. I mean, I m a mother. I could not even imagine that, another neighbor, Nakita Osborne, said.
Detectives described the incident as a brutal, personal crime.
There are no signs of forced entry, said Detective W.L. Meeler, the Houston Police Department.
Lawrence Chambers has a criminal past, having once served 10 years in prison, but neighbors said the family appeared to be normal to them.
I ve never seen the police, no kind of disturbance. None, Chavis said.
Another neighbor said she spoke to the stepfather just the day before and, once again, all appeared to be fine.
I said what are you doing tomorrow for the Super Bowl, are you barbecuing? and he said Yeah, I think I am going to put something on the grill, and that was it, Nadjala Morris said.
