HOUSTON A male suspect was sent to a hospital after a police officer shot him for refusing to put down a weapon early Saturday morning in south Houston, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD spokeswoman Jodi Silva said that at 1:30 a.m. Saturday an off-duty was going to a club in the neighborhood near the 2200 block of Bastrop and Webster streets when he was approached by a man with a weapon.

The officer told the suspect that he was a police officer and got back into his vehicle and left. The officer then drove to a nearby police station where he requested the help of on-duty police officers, Silva said.

The officers returned to the club and found the suspect still brandishing a weapon, Silva said. The officers commanded that the suspect drop the weapon. He started to walk away and then turned around and pointed the weapon at the police.

One of the officers shot and wounded the suspect when the man threatened the police, Silva said. He was taken to Ben Taub Hospital with non-lifethreatening wounds.
