HOUSTON An 11-year-old boy can be credited with helping many of his neighbors get out of harm s way after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Pearland Thursday morning.

Heavy flames could be seen shooting from several units at the Royal Oaks Apartments in the 1300 block of Broadway when the Pearland Fire Department arrived to the scene. Firefighters from the Houston Fire Department were also called out to assist.

The boy s mother said her three kids were getting ready for school when her son opened the bedroom closet and saw flames. The family immediately fled the home and the 11-year-old ran door-to-door trying to warn people. Other neighbors joined in. I was just making sure that everybody got out. We ran to all the doors and made sure everybody got out of the apartment, said Clay Corkan. And the dog was still in, but they ended up getting her out.

The fire was moving so quickly, it caught everyone by surprise.

One of my buddies was still in his underwear until about 7 trying to get somebody to bring him some clothes. It was fast, real fast, said Hunter Livingston, fire victim. The way it crawls up the walls you just don t know how it is. The fire department was here in almost four or five minutes, but it was too late. Basically the damage was done.

Three units were destroyed. No one was injured.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
