HOUSTON Police arrived just in time to stop a man, armed with a knife and a hammer, who was allegedly attacking his own mother at a senior living complex in southeast Houston Thursday night.

Houston police received a call about a woman in distress around 10 p.m. from the Simmons Garden Apartments on Scott Street.

Police said officers surrounding the unit looked through a window and saw the man dragging his mother down a hallway. She already had multiple stab wounds and, as her son tried to attack her again, police said they broke a window and yelled for him to stop. The man allegedly refused and police opened fire, killing him.

Police said the suspect was in his late teens to early twenties.

Neighbors who knew the woman and her son said they saw no signs of trouble.

She was a nice lady. She was over there with him. They would leave together, come home together. You know, they were just very nice people, said Gloria Jefferson.

Some speculate that he must have had some sort of mental breakdown.

I think he had a mental health issue. I m sure he did, but it wasn t, it s people around here. He wasn t violent. I don t know what could have provoked that, said Fran Rogers.

The mother was sent to Ben Taub Hospital to undergo surgery. As of Friday afternoon, she was listed in serious condition, police said.
