AUSTIN, Texas -- One of the biggest parties of the year is set to take over Zilker Park for not just one but two weekends.
The Austin City Limits Music Festival begins Friday with big names performing like Lionel Richie, Depeche Mode and The Cure.
Many in Austin hope the bands and their fans will attend the first weekend of ACL, stay for the week in Austin and then attend the second weekend.
The Austin Police Department, Parks and Recreation Department and a private security company will keep music lovers safe over the six-day party.
The festival brought in more than $100 million to the city in three days last year. Austin's Convention and Visitors Bureau says an expansion of the festival could only mean even more money for the city.
We're definitely hoping that they'll bookend so they'll come in on Thursday and stay that weekend. Then stay during the week and hopefully enjoy a day or two of the festival the next week, Shilpa Bakre with the Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau said.
About 75,000 people a day are expected to be at Zilker Park during the festival. They are coming from all over the country and booking area hotels. Many in Austin are sold out.
Tickets are also selling out. A check of the festival's website shows that three of the four regular ticket packages are gone.
