PASADENA, Texas -- An impromptu vigil was held on Thursday at Sam Rayburn High School to honor high school football star LaTrone Williams.

He seemed unstoppable, but the 17-year-old s life came to a tragic end in a crash on Crenshaw Road near Beltway 8 in Pasadena.

Williams was a star running back at for the Sam Rayburn Texans. He posted a YouTube page highlighting the many touchdowns he made for the high school football team.

His death shocked friends just days before students come back from their summer break.

I have so many wonderful memories, said Pat Solomon, Williams grandmother.

Police said Williams was a passenger in a car that hit a curb and flipped over at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators said the 17-year-old male driver and another 17-year-old female passenger were not hurt.

Officers are still trying to figure out what caused the driver to lose control of the car. They said that the alcohol was not a factor in the accident.

Friends said Williams was looking forward to his final year of playing football in high school and had already talked to colleges interested in recruiting him.

LaTrone s classmates took to Twitter to express their condolences for the young man they called Tron.

The Sam Rayburn Health Occupations Students of America organization tweeted that counselors would be available on campus.

Many friends were looking forward to seeing him when classes begin at Sam Rayburn High School next week. They will instead be making plans to attend his funeral.

The first day of school in Pasadena is Tuesday.
