PEARLAND, Texas At least a dozen high school students are involved in a burglary ring that targeted homes in Pearland and Bellaire, according to police.

An alert pawn shop worker called police when one of the students showed up at his store trying to sell some jewelry.

Another teen became a suspect when he left his student ID inside one of the homes that was burglarized.

Police have at least one 18-year-old student in custody and expect to make more arrests soon.

Investigators say the suspects attend Dawson and Manvel high schools. Classmates at Dawson were shocked to hear the news.

There is no reason you should go steal something that belongs to someone else because they probably worked really hard for it, said Haley Borstek, a Dawson student.

I think it s really out of hand that someone from Dawson would do something like this, and it s giving our whole school a bad name, said Kayley Walton, a Dawson student.

The teen burglars are suspected in at least 10 burglaries. Police believe they ve been leaving school early in groups.

The burglars kicked in the back door of homes, then go straight for jewelry and electronics.

We ve had different types where some of them are just targeting the master bedroom. They re going in quickly. They aren t worried about the alarms because they know they will be inside the resident for a minute or so, said Bellaire Assistant Chief Michael Leal.

The latest case happened Saturday morning on Pecan Grove Drive in Pearland.
