THE WOODLANDS, Texas -- A home in The Woodlands was destroyed after a fire Friday morning.

Just after 8 a.m., George Leach woke up to the smell of smoke in his home located in the 30 block of Rhapsody Bend Drive.

When he opened the closet door, he found a light fixture burning. He attempted to extinguish it, and that s when the fire erupted. His wife called 911. Leach, his wife and their two children were able to safely get out of the home.

Firefighters with The Woodlands Fire Department arrived and began to extinguish the blaze which had grown.

Officials said because of the way the house was built, they had a difficult time trying to reach areas of the fire. The concrete slate roof started to collapse in places, so firefighters were forced to fight the fire from outside.

Additional fire crews were called to the scene to help fight the flames.

The fire was fully extinguished around 10:30 a.m.

Some of the home owners vehicles suffered minor damage in the fire.

Firefighters tried to salvage some belongings including purses and paintings. They were also able to recover framed NFL football jerseys.

Montgomery County Assistant Fire Marshal Roland Morgan said the home was a total loss with heavy fire damage to the upper floors and water damage to the first floor.
