HOUSTON Houston Dynamo President Chris Canetti has joined up with officials at Quinnipiac University to host Soccer Night in Newtown , an event dedicated to help residents of Newtown, Connecticut regain some normalcy after the school shooting tragedy in December.

26 people, including 20 children, were killed when a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary on December 14.

I think like most Americans, we re all very sad over this tragedy that happened in Newtown but we re also feeling very compelled to try and do something to help, Canetti told KHOU 11 Sports. Between those two things, it drove me to come up with this plan.

On January 7th, Canetti and five Dynamo players will join soccer stars from across the country for an event that will allow kids and families in Newtown to take their minds off the tragedy for at least a little while.

Everyone is trying to find a way to help and you know it became very clear to me that money wasn t what they needed, said Canetti. They need to see hope and happiness so we we re trying to go in there and try to bring some smiles to the kids faces and create some life long memories and share a positive message.

Forward Brian Ching, midfielders Brad Davis, Ricardo Clark and Corey Ashe and goalkeeper Tally Hall will all take time to travel up to Newtown for the event. Canetti says the guys wasted no time in agreeing to help out the cause.

We ve got some great guys on our team who are very very committed to the community and I knew that when I called the players there would be no hesitancy to respond and help and that s exactly what I got, said Canetti. They re doing it on their free time and their volunteering and I think they will do an excellent job in helping this community who has been so sadly struck by tragedy.

Canetti, who is from Connecticut, added that Newtown has a rich soccer tradition and feels that this event will go a long way in giving the community a little bit of hope.

The players will meet with families, pose for pictures and take part in several activities.
