AUSTIN, Texas -- Deceased state Sen. Mario Gallegos Jr. lay in state in the Senate Chamber of the Texas Capitol.
State troopers carried the Houston lawmaker s casket through the east entrance of the Capitol. A memorial service was scheduled for Friday afternoon.
Gallegos died on Tuesday from complications related to liver disease. He has represented Harris County in the Legislature first as a representative in 1995 and then as a senator.
Colleagues have praised Gallegos for his work on education, civil rights and local issues in his impoverished district. Gallegos was running for re-election this year, and under state law, it s too late to replace his name on the ballot.
If Gallegos win the November election, state officials will schedule a special election to replace him before the end of the year.
