HOUSTON It was her birthday, but instead of receiving gifts eight-year old Leilah Mosley found a way to help other children in need.

Her party had all the makings of a little girl s birthday ice cream, balloons, party favors, friends and family. But it was a party with a purpose.

I m just growing up and I have a lot of different abilities, I can go different places, said Mosley. All my friends are coming. They re donating shoes; they are just giving to the Star of Hope.

The children s shoes will go to the Star of Hope, which helps Houston s homeless, one of whom happened to be a member of Leilah s family.

My aunt came [to Star of Hope]. You really helped and now she has an apartment, said Mosley.

The organization says there couldn t be a better time to help.

In the summer time we have more mouths to feed, more children because school is out. Because of the heat we have more people in our shelters, said Scott Arthur from Star of Hope.

Through her party, Mosley collected around 30 pairs of new children s shoes- to donate to the Star of Hope.
