HOUSTON A laptop containing information about MD Anderson Cancer Center patients has been stolen from a doctor s home.

The unencrypted laptop contained the patients personal information, including names, Social Security numbers and medical information.

The unencrypted laptop was taken on April 30.

The cancer facility began notifying the patients affected on Thursday after working with forensics experts to recreate the information on the stolen computer.

MD Anderson says it is accelerating efforts to encrypt all MD Anderson computers to make it more difficult for unauthorized users to retrieve information.

The cancer center is also offering credit monitoring services to those patients affected.
