CONROE, Texas -- About a dozen baby chickens in Conroe are lucky to be alive.

Some were in the brush and some were where the concrete is, said Hannah Kays, an Oak Ridge High School agriculture student who searched the woods near her home after receiving a text message from a friend about the chicks that had been left out in the cold to die.

There were live chicks laying near dead ones, said Kays. They were bundled together in groups of 10. I found 13 baby chickens alive and I found 37 dead ones.

The baby chickens, which were being raised for display at the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show, were found the same day an agriculture teacher at Oak Ridge High resigned. District officials confirm that the teacher is now the subject of an animal cruelty investigation.

I think they re a monster and deserve to be left in the woods to freeze to death, said Kays.

KHOU 11 News is not naming the teacher because no charges have been filed. But no one answered the door at the teacher s home. According to district officials, the teacher had been employed for about two and a half years.

I know they re just chickens but it s a life, said Kays. It s just breaks your heart.
