ROSWELL, N.M. -- Police say children have been injured in a shooting at a Roswell middle school in New Mexico Tuesday, reports CBS affiliate KRQE.

Roswell police said the suspected shooter was arrested Tuesday morning at Berrendo Middle School. The school has been placed on lockdown.

KRQE reports a 14-year-old hurt in the shooting was being airlifted to University Hospital in Lubbock, Texas.

A spokesperson for the Eastern New Mexico Medial Center tells CBS News two students are being treated for injuries. The spokesperson said the students were injured during the shooting but would not confirm if they were shot.

Police say parents can pick up their children from a nearby mall.

Roswell, which is in the southeastern quarter of the state of New Mexico, has been rocked by gang violence in recent years and has asked Homeland Security Investigations to step in and help.
