HOUSTON Child Protective Services confirmed to KHOU 11 News on Friday afternoon that a 3-year-old girl is dead and that her mother faces charges of child endangerment.
Sabrina Maria Deleon is in the Harris County jail after she was arrested on Wednesday and charged with child endangerment.
The investigation began earlier this year when Deleon was involved in a car accident. Deleon was suspected of driving under the influence, while her 6-year-old was present in the vehicle.
An investigator with CPS who was assigned to Deleon s case began questioning the mother on the whereabouts of her 3-year-old Lee-onna Ramirez and discovered that the daughter was missing.
According to KHOU s sources, Deleon told investigators several different stories about what happened to the little girl.
In talking to mom, the worker became concerned that the mom s explanation of where the 3-year-old was not ringing true, said Gwen Carter with CPS.
A judge granted a request to have Deleon s 6-year-old child removed from her custody after CPS called for an emergency hearing Friday morning.
CPS is not giving any details about why they think they child is dead or where she might be at this time.
KHOU spoke with Deleon s cousin, Christina Gonzalez, who said that their family did not realize that the 3-year-old girl was missing. The family thought that CPS had taken the child away from Deleon, because she did not provide proper care for the little girl when she was sick with a high fever.
She said CPS had them, that she went to the hospital and that CPS took the baby away from her. So everybody didn t think anything like this, Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez said that the family did not start questioning the situation until investigators informed them that CPS did not have Deleon s daughter.
The investigator came and said CPS didn t have her, that s when we all started asking her questions. We just found out that she gave a confession saying that the baby is dead, Gonzalez said.
Deleon s family said they hope that the truth about what happened to the child is revealed.
Just for the baby s sake, we hope she tells us what really happened so we can have a proper burial, Gonzalez said.
Authorities said that more charges would not be filed until their investigation is complete.
